A sprint spike is one of the few products in footwear where nothing is negotiable. The plate has to be rigid, the upper has to hold the foot still, and everything else is weight. The Adizero Prime SP 3 Strung is adidas's answer, with a full-length spike plate and Lightstrike Pro under the forefoot, and Noah Lyles took the 100 metres in Paris in 2024 in the line.
Strung is the upper technology, and it is unusual enough to be worth explaining. Rather than weaving a textile and cutting it to shape, adidas lays individual threads according to movement data, so direction and density vary across the shoe. On a spike, where a millimetre of unwanted stretch costs something measurable, that is a functional argument rather than a marketing one.
Y-3 handled this version, taking the aluminium and black palette the label uses across its own catalogue, blacking out the branding and finishing the outsole in metallic silver. It came in 2024 in a very small run at $300, and Yamamoto's studio also dressed the Japanese team that summer.
