adidas showed Futurecraft 4D in April 2017 as the first performance midsole made with Carbon's Digital Light Synthesis, a process that pulls a lattice out of a bath of liquid resin using projected light and oxygen instead of pouring foam into a mould. Because the geometry is coded rather than tooled, stiffness can be varied zone by zone within a single part.
Y-3 received the technology the following year, and that marked the first time adidas applied 4D printing outside a strictly performance brief. The Runner 4D Halo continues that thread: a Primeknit upper with a cord lacing system sits above the printed unit, and the tooling is left uncovered so the lattice reads as the centre of the shoe rather than as a sole hidden under a runner.
This off-white version arrived in June 2023 at the top of the label's price range. Pale colouring suits the construction, since a printed lattice loses most of its detail in black and shows every strut in a light tone.
