adidas launched the ZX line in 1984 to cover both training and competition running, and it became the place the company tried things out: Torsion, Soft Cell and other systems appeared there first. Comfort and the striking colour work of the era carried it beyond running, and through the late 1980s the ZX runners were adopted by subcultures across Europe, particularly in Britain, where they became terrace wear rather than training shoes.
The ZX 2K Boost is a modern reading of that history rather than a retro. Its outline draws on the ZX 710, one of the 1980s runners, but the sole is Boost, and the upper is built from contemporary mesh and synthetic panels instead of suede and nylon.
The 2.0 update followed in 2021, and this version strips the colour out entirely. That is a deliberate reversal, since the appeal of the original ZX runners was largely chromatic, and a triple black pair keeps only the shape.
