Trompe l'oeil means 'deceives the eye', and that is the whole idea here. The Spring/Summer 2019 series photographs five shoes from the adidas archive and maps each one onto the Stan Smith through 3D modelling, so the print follows the contours of the upper. On the Peach Stan the source is the Peachtree, and the palette stays soft: a Light Sand upper with Cloud White and Core White supporting it. From a distance the shoe reads as a faded vintage trainer; up close it is a Stan Smith cupsole with a picture of another shoe wrapped around it.
Simons's own signatures carry over from his earlier Stan Smith work. The three rows of perforations that normally sit where adidas's stripes would be are replaced by a perforated R punched into the sidewall, and the tongue tags alternate between a sketched Stan Smith portrait and a portrait of the designer. The partnership between adidas and the Belgian designer dates to his Fall/Winter 2013 Paris show, and the Trompe L'oeil prints were its 2019 chapter, arriving between April and May of that year. This one released on May 10, 2019, at a retail price of $280, the price across the whole series.
