Grown rather than tanned: the upper on this Gazelle Indoor is Mylo, a material made from mushroom root structure and used here as a leather substitute, which makes it the most experimental make in the whole family. Sean Wotherspoon covered it in embroidery rather than print, working in natural, blue and orange fibres so the colour sits in the thread rather than in a dye, and the texture of the stitching is the first thing you notice on the shoe.
White synthetic leather handles the serrated three stripes and the heel tab, both carrying his branding, and the same logo repeats on cork insoles inside. A semi-translucent gum cupsole keeps the low profile. At $180 on October 13, 2023 this was the most expensive of his Gazelle Indoors by a clear margin, and the material is the reason. Putting a grown substitute for leather on a mass-market trainer, rather than on a luxury accessory where the cost would disappear into the price, was the whole point of the exercise.
