The Kayano has had two lives. For three decades it was a running shoe bought by runners, sold on arch support and mileage, largely invisible outside specialist shops. Then an older entry in the line, the fourteenth version from 2008, was pulled back into fashion years after it left the running wall, and the name started turning up on people who had never used it for its intended purpose. This 2021 model belongs firmly to the first life. It is a wide-fitting build of the twenty-eighth edition, made for feet the standard last pinches, and the design decisions in it are all functional ones. Hazard green against black is a running-range accent colour, chosen for visibility rather than style, and it appeared across several ASICS models that season. Nothing about the shoe was aimed at the audience that later adopted its ancestors.
