By 2022 the racing shoe had been redefined. A thick slab of energetic foam wrapped around a carbon plate had become the standard for anyone chasing a time, and the prices moved accordingly. The Hyper Speed is the other answer: a plain racing flat, thin underfoot, light on the scale, and sold for well under half what a plated racer costs.
There is not much to it, and that is the argument. The midsole carries no plate and no rocker geometry; the drop sits around seven millimetres; the upper is a single layer of open mesh with minimal overlays. Runners use it for track intervals, tempo work and short road races: the sessions where ground feel and low weight matter more than stack height.
ASICS has a long history with this kind of shoe, and the Hyper Speed reads as a deliberate continuation of it rather than a stripped-down version of something else. The orange pop finish suits that reading: a flat, saturated colour across the mesh, white below, and nothing else going on.
