ASICS sells two kinds of fast shoe. At the top sit the carbon racers priced like carbon racers. The Magic Speed is the one underneath: plated, quick, and roughly two-thirds the money.
The second edition moved the concept closer to the real thing. The original Magic Speed carried a half-length plate through the midfoot and forefoot; version two runs a plate the full length of the shoe, sandwiched between layers of FF Blast Plus, a bouncier foam than the FF Blast the first model used. The drop rose from five millimetres to seven, and the whole thing lands around eight and a half ounces in a men’s ten.
The result is a shoe with a specific window. Reviewers describe the transition as stiff and slightly awkward at easy paces and snappy once the pace lifts, which makes it a workout and race-day shoe rather than a daily trainer, the classic trade for anything with a plate in it.
