Converse made its first basketball shoe in 1917 and called it the Non-Skid. Chuck Taylor, a semi-professional player, joined the company four years later and pushed for changes to flexibility and ankle support; his signature went onto the ankle patch, which made it the first athletic shoe endorsed by a named person. By 1923 the design had settled into the shape everyone now recognises, five-pointed star and all. It was the official Olympic shoe from 1936 to 1968 and the training shoe of the US armed forces during the Second World War.
The Chuck 70 reaches back into the middle of that run, reproducing the late-1960s build rather than the current one. The differences are structural: heavier canvas, a higher rubber midsole, a one-piece sole, and a black heel patch.
Mineral Clay puts that build in a soft, earthy brown with egret and black in the trim, which reads as a considerably calmer shoe than the black or white staples.
