The 725 is a turn-of-the-century running shoe rather than a 1970s one, and that changes what it looks like. Where New Balance's heritage models are built from suede panels and flat lines, the 725 comes from the period when running uppers were assembled in layers: mesh base, synthetic overlays stacked over it, and TPU pieces added for structure, all of it visible rather than smoothed away.
New Balance brought it back in 2023 across a run of colourways, keeping the original construction cues and the C-CAP midsole, a compression-moulded EVA the company has used for shock absorption across decades of running shoes. Archive versions paired that with ABZORB in the heel.
Its return was well timed. The thick, technical, slightly awkward running shoe of the early 2000s had become desirable again, and the 725 fits that shape without being a novelty: the proportions are genuinely period-correct because the shoe is period-correct. Arctic Grey with silver detailing leans into it, since cool metallic trim is exactly what a running shoe of that vintage would have shipped with.
