Most archive-mining sneakers copy a single shoe. The RC30 instead copies a set of habits from a period, which is why it feels older than anything it directly reproduces.
The details are specific. The N on the sidewall has softened, rounded edges, drawn from the era before New Balance had standardised the logo overlay. A stripe runs along the midsole as a callback to competition models in the archive. The outsole carries an exaggerated ripple, a scaled-up reading of the tread pattern on the Trackster, the 1960 shoe that was the first running model offered in multiple widths. Even the shape of the sole is a reference: the curve through the bottom and the lift under the midfoot reproduce the slight irregularities that came out of how shoes were actually built in the 1970s, rather than correcting them.
The upper is nylon with suede panels, the standard materials of the period. In Marblehead and Team Away Grey it stays entirely tonal, which puts all the attention on the shape.
