Oregon and Nike are close enough that the university is routinely called by the company's name. Phil Knight ran track there under coach Bill Bowerman, the two founded the business together in 1964, and Knight has since put more than $100 million into an athletics fund and tens of millions more into the stadium. Nike manufactures all of the school's apparel and gear, has trialled experimental designs on its teams, and has hired Oregon graduates as designers, Tinker Hatfield among them. Steve Prefontaine, running for Oregon in the early 1970s, was the first prominent track athlete to compete in the company's shoes.
The shoe underneath this one is Hatfield's, from 1997. He built the 13 on a black panther: the outsole is shaped like the pads of a paw, and the round hologram set into the heel stands in for an eye catching light in the dark. A carbon fibre plate runs through the sole.
This version is a team pair rather than a retail one, dated November 2017, worked in the Ducks' green against white with the same hologram at the ankle.
