Bin 23 was Jordan Brand's way of releasing shoes that had been designed and then shelved: samples, unused colourways, versions of models that stopped short of production. Rather than treat them as archive curiosities, the programme put them out in deliberately small numbers, and the Premio 13 is one of the smallest, under 1,800 pairs when it arrived in August 2010 at $175.
The base is Tinker Hatfield's 1997 design, which took a black panther as its starting point. The outsole reproduces the pads of a paw, the circular hologram at the heel stands in for an eye, and a carbon fibre plate stiffens the midfoot. It is one of the more literal ideas in the line and one of the few that survived contact with a basketball shoe intact.
The Premio treatment reworks it in materials rather than shapes: white leather perforated across the throat for airflow, nubuck panels in deep red, and desert sand along the mudguard and heel. The palette is drawn from cigars, which Jordan was known to keep close.
