By the time the fifteenth Air Jordan reached shelves in February 2000, Michael Jordan had retired for the second time and the line had to carry itself. Tinker Hatfield took the design away from the court entirely, to the North American X-15, a rocket-powered research aircraft flown in the late 1950s and 1960s. The reference shows in the protruding toe, the low swept profile and the woven upper panels, which used a kevlar fibre in place of conventional mesh over leather.
Zoom Air sat in the midsole. The shoe was unveiled in three colourways, of which this white and Columbia blue version is the one still asked for by name; the shade sits close to the pale blue of Jordan's college years, though the shoe itself carries no school marks. It listed at 150 dollars, and these are the original pairs rather than any of the retros that followed, which have reworked the materials each time the model has returned.
