Michael Jordan played his final NBA game on April 16, 2003, a road loss in Philadelphia. It closed a fifteenth season in which he turned 40 and was the only Washington player to appear in all 82 games. The Air Jordan 18 is the shoe he finished in, which is most of why it matters.
Tate Kuerbis handled the design, and the references were unusually specific for the line. The carbon fiber plate came out of Formula One chassis construction. The rubber wrap across the heel came from racing drivers' shoes. The bold stitching along the sole came from Italian dress shoemaking, and the chrome eyelets and lace tips pushed the whole thing further away from basketball equipment.
This original pair, black with Sport Royal, released on February 8, 2003 at $175, two months before that last game. The 18 has never drawn the retro traffic the earlier numbers get, partly because it belongs to a chapter of Jordan's career most people had already stopped watching.
