Lauhala weaving is a Hawaiian craft, strips of hala leaf plaited into mats, hats and baskets. KICKS Hawaii put a woven lauhala panel on the quarter of a Dunk Low, which is the part of the shoe a Nike leather panel would normally cover, and the texture change is visible from several feet away. Around it the palette stays close to the island reference without illustrating it. Khaki nubuck forms the base, Baroque Brown deepens the overlays, and Mean Green supplies the one saturated note. ALOHA is lettered on the tongue and HAWAII on the heel tab.
Nike released it in November 2004 at 120 dollars. Regional shop collaborations were how the Dunk built its second life in the early 2000s, each one tied to a specific place, and this is among the more literal readings of that brief: a local material, applied to the panel where a Nike leather would normally sit.
