Swapping the upper from leather to canvas changes the shoe more than it sounds like it should. Canvas has no grain and no shine, so the Air Force 1 High loses the plumpness that leather gives it and reads flatter and more structural. Black across the whole upper pushes that further, leaving the shape and the stitch lines to do the work.
The sail midsole and outsole are the counterweight. Rather than the bright white the model usually sits on, sail is an off-white with a slight cream cast, and it softens the black above it while giving the sneaker an aged look straight out of the box. The high-top build is unchanged: a padded collar, the adjustable strap across the ankle, and the small metal medallion hanging from the laces that has been part of the design since 1982. At $140 this sat forty dollars above a standard leather Air Force 1 High, the premium Nike charges for its Retro program treatments.
