Bruce Kilgore's Air Force 1 arrived in 1982 as the first basketball shoe to carry Nike's Air cushioning, and it was gone by 1984. What brought it back was demand the company had not planned for: Nike reintroduced it in 1986 with a revised logo and heel treatment, and it never left again. By 2007 it had appeared in more than 1,700 colourways and was earning an estimated eight hundred million dollars a year.
The 25th anniversary in 2007 produced both the Air Force XXV and a small set of luxury pairs, made in crocodile and anaconda leather with gold aglets and carrying a two-thousand-dollar price. This is one of them, cut in a deep Baroque Brown with the Swoosh in crocodile, metallic gold detailing and the heel panel debossed rather than stitched.
What holds it together is that the shoe underneath is unchanged. The proportions, the perforated toe, the Air-Sole unit and the thick cupsole are the 1982 basketball shoe; only the skin is different.
