This Air Max 1 '87 carries Nike's N7 branding, part of a collection that supports Native American and Indigenous youth sport through the N7 Fund, with the '7' referring to the seven-generations principle behind the name. The '87 label itself refers to the shoe's original 1987 launch year and highlights the classic visible Max Air unit, rather than any of the low-profile Ultra or Essential soles used elsewhere in the line. The upper mixes suede across light bone, black, dusty cactus, bright mandarin, tour yellow and sesame, a warm, earth-toned palette distinct from the brighter pop colorways in the family.
The visible Max Air window itself dates to Tinker Hatfield, who trained as an architect, joined Nike in 1981, and moved into footwear design in 1985, cutting a window into the midsole so the cushioning could be seen instead of hidden. He later pointed to the exposed pipes and structure of the Centre Pompidou museum in Paris as the inspiration. This N7 pair keeps that same visible heel cushioning intact under the multi-tone suede build. Nike released it June 21, 2024 at $160, a price shared with the family's other suede-heavy special editions.
