Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Max 1 after training as an architect, drawing on the Centre Pompidou's exposed pipework in Paris to justify cutting a window into the midsole and showing the Air unit for the first time on a Nike shoe. That idea faced internal resistance at Nike before it shipped, and the visible Air unit has anchored the model's identity ever since.
