One half of Nike's March 2020 City Pack, alongside a London edition, the Amsterdam Air Max 1 was a Europe-only release that landed on March 19, 2020 at $175. The materials are the point: suede, tumbled leather and nubuck in a palette of Red Bark, Khaki, Terra Blush and Dusty Peach, with a terracotta-toned heel. Every graphic detail is a reference. The dark green Swoosh references the doors of the city's canal houses, the heel carries an embroidered outline of the canals, and three red crosses on the outer forefoot come from Amsterdam's coat of arms.
The city has earned its Air Max 1 references. Amsterdam artist Piet Parra co-designed the 2010 'Cherrywood', a run of roughly 258 pairs, and returned with a pastel Air Max 1 in 2018, so a Nike-branded tribute to the city was arriving on well-prepared ground. The City Pack treatment differs from those collaborations in being entirely Nike's own design, sold at a premium price for the materials rather than for a partner's name. Underneath, it is a standard Air Max 1: foam midsole, visible Max Air unit at the heel, rubber outsole. The result is a warm, autumnal pair that tells its story in small details rather than a loud print.
