Hatfield was trained as an architect and worked on Nike's buildings before he worked on its shoes, which is the usual explanation for what he did to the Air Max 1. After seeing the Pompidou Centre in Paris he cut a window into the midsole and left the air unit visible, turning a hidden component into the shoe's defining feature, and starting a line that has run ever since.
Suede versions of the model have a particular relationship with European cities, and this one belongs to a four-shoe set built around Milan in 2013. It is a quickstrike, meaning a small production run placed in a limited number of accounts rather than a general release.
The upper is entirely suede in a pale linen tone, with an olive midsole underneath and atomic red picking out the upper eyelets, the lining and the outsole: the sort of restrained three-colour arrangement that works on this shape and very little else. A metal lace tag, embroidered Nike Air branding at the heel and a city-specific tongue label finish it. It listed at $120.
