About the Nike Air Max 270

The Air Max line had always adapted running technology for everyday wear. The 270 inverted that. It was the first Air unit Nike designed from the start for a shoe that would never be run in, which freed it from the durability and stability constraints a racing midsole imposes.

What resulted was tall (thirty-two millimetres at the heel, the largest visible unit Nike had produced) and shaped for a soft, sinking step rather than a responsive one. The upper is a knitted bootie with very little structure, because none is required.

The design borrows visually from the Air Max 93 and the Air 180, and the number comes from the same place: designers had long referred to the 93 as the 270 for the degrees of visibility in its bag. It launched in early 2018 and expanded across a wall of colourways by that spring.
