The Air Max line spent its first decade arguing about how much of the air unit you should be able to see. The 95 answered by changing the subject: rather than enlarging the window, Sergio Lozano built the whole shoe around a body. The stacked panels running down the side were conceived as ribs or muscle fibre, the strip through the middle as a spine, and the material grades from dark at the sole to light at the collar the way a gradient does on skin.
Underneath, it went further than any previous model by putting air cushioning in the forefoot as well as the heel, so the shoe was as much a technical step as a visual one.
What has kept it in production is that the layered construction takes colour extremely well; each panel can be graded separately, which is why gradients appear on it more often than on any other Nike silhouette. This version works through light and dark smoke greys with a chlorine blue used sparingly. It released in April 2022 at $175.
