Released only in Japan, this Air Max 95 takes its name and its story from Marine Day, a national holiday also called Ocean Day or Sea Day. Nike put it out on July 14, 2019, at $170, in a midnight navy upper set off by white and pink detailing and a neon-toned Air unit at the heel.
Japan has a particular relationship with the Air Max 95: when the shoe first reached Japanese stores in the 1990s, scarcity pushed resale prices far above retail and even led to street muggings targeting people wearing them, an episode remembered as Air Max hunting. This 2019 release keeps the model's layered, anatomy-referencing paneling, the same rib-and-spine construction Sergio Lozano built into the shoe when Nike introduced it in 1995, dressed here in a colourway made for a Japanese audience specifically.
