2003 was the year the Dunk stopped being only a basketball shoe. Nike spent it handing the model to outside names, and Eric Haze, a graphic artist with roots in New York graffiti, was among them. The colours are restrained for an artist project: black leather with white and medium grey, no loud print, no novelty material. The interest is in the finishing rather than the graphic, which is a Premium build trait, and in the fact that a shoe carrying an artist's name in 2003 chose to look like a Dunk High rather than a canvas.
That same year Nike ran Dunk collaborations with several other names from skateboarding, art and fashion. The pattern set then, an established model handed over with the silhouette left alone, still describes most Dunk collaborations two decades later.
