Red and white is the oldest kind of Dunk. Nike introduced the model in 1985 with university basketball palettes, so a scheme like this one, a single saturated team colour laid over white leather, is the shoe operating exactly as designed rather than reinterpreting anything.
Gym Red takes the overlays, the Swoosh and the heel, white holds the base, the collar lining and the midsole. Nothing is printed and nothing is embossed. On a high cut the red gets the extra ankle panel as well, which is why this reads as a bolder shoe than the same colours on a Dunk Low. It was a general release in August 2017 at 100 dollars, a couple of years before demand for the model climbed sharply.
