About the Nike Dunk Low Premium "Doernbecher"

Doernbecher Freestyle pairs patients at a children's hospital in Portland with Nike designers, and the shoes that result are sold to raise money for the hospital. Lance Dillon made this Dunk Low Premium while he was undergoing chemotherapy for leukaemia. The design is personal rather than decorative. Black leather and green suede form the base. Lasered graffiti runs across the panels, carrying his family's names and the number of days he had spent in treatment, alongside the words fight, power and warrior.

Nike brought Dillon's design back a second time in 2013. The Dunk is a common canvas for Freestyle because its panelling gives a young designer a lot of separate surfaces to work with, and because the model is already familiar enough that the story attached to it is what gets noticed.
