This is where the format started. Nike SB was promoting its first full-length skate film in 2007 and made a shoe out of its own back catalogue: 31 previous Dunks, disassembled and recombined so that every panel, lace, tongue, outsole and line of stitching on the finished pair is lifted from a specific earlier release. The two shoes do not match each other, and neither shoe matches itself.
The conceit has a hole in it by design. Of the 31 donors, thirty were shoes people could have bought. The thirty-first was not: the neon green lining on the left shoe comes from a Dunk that existed as a single pair, which means the composite includes a piece nobody could have owned.
Nike has since applied the idea across the company (to basketball signature lines, to the Air Jordan 1, to running models) and it has become a recognised category of release rather than a one-off. All of it descends from this shoe, which arrived in October 2007 at $120.
