The car came first. The DeLorean DMC-12, with its brushed stainless steel body and upward opening doors, was built in Northern Ireland and turned into a time machine by the 1985 film Back to the Future. Nike's 6.0 line rebuilt it as a Dunk.
Every element maps onto something. The upper is no sew matte silver, standing in for unpainted stainless steel. The eyestay is cut in the shape of a gull wing door. Black lines across the heel copy the louvred slats over the car's rear window. The outsole runs three colours, matching the arrangement of the tail lights. A stamp on the tongue reads Belfast, naming the city where the car was assembled. It released on Black Friday, 26 November 2010, at 90 dollars, a low price for a shoe carrying this much design work.
