The Free programme began with a conversation rather than a design brief. Nike's Tobie Hatfield was told by Stanford track coach Vin Lananna that part of his athletes' success came from taking their shoes off to train, and the Nike Sports Research Lab went to the university's golf course to find out why. Between 2002 and 2004 researchers filmed runners barefoot on grass with high-speed cameras and pressure sensors, measuring how the foot and lower leg behave when nothing is wrapped around them.
What came back was a shoe with a deeply siped, segmented outsole that flexes in several directions, a low heel-to-toe offset and very little structure. Nike launched the technology in 2004 and has kept a Free model in the line ever since, drifting steadily from a training tool toward a general-purpose casual runner.
This pair is the second Free Run in wolf grey with fossil stone, dated to August 2021 at $110. By then the line was sold as much on the feel of the flex grooves as on any performance claim.
