The name describes the color scheme, but the parts worth reading sit on the back of each shoe. One heel carries the initials of LeBron James' children; the other carries the area code of Akron, Ohio, where he was born and raised. Split across a left and a right, it is a shoe you can only read properly while wearing it.
Everything else is restraint. The Battleknit 2.0 upper is black and white, broken by tumbled leather at the tongue and heel overlay, the only traditional material on a shoe otherwise made of knit. The Swoosh is metallic silver, the heel tab picks up red, and the outsole is a translucent icy blue over a white midsole.
The 16 was the model in which Nike stopped treating a full-length Zoom Air unit as something to conceal, running it the length of the foot and leaving it on show. At $185, this was that engineering dressed for people who were never going to play in it.
