About the Nike Mag 'Back To The Future'

Hatfield built the original as a prop. Back to the Future Part II, released in 1989, was set in October 2015, and the shoe he made for Marty McFly had illuminated panels and laces that tightened on their own, a piece of production design rather than a product, and for two decades that is all it was.

Nike made it real in 2011, minus the lacing. The electroluminescent logo on the strap and the LED arrays at the midsole and heel worked; the shoe still needed hands to put on. Production was 1,510 pairs: 1,500 auctioned online beginning 8 September 2011, ten more sold at live auctions around the world, individual pairs going for between roughly $10,600 and $15,900. The sale raised $4.7 million, and Sergey Brin and his wife matched donations up to $5 million, taking the total to $9.4 million for the Michael J. Fox Foundation and its Parkinson's research.

The self-lacing version arrived later. Nike showed it on 21 October 2015, the exact date McFly travels to in the film, and released 89 pairs by raffle, raising a further $6.75 million.
