Nike SB spent its early years handing shoes to the people running its skate program rather than to designers, and the 2005 Team Manager series was the clearest version of that. Managers from Diamond Supply Co., Real, Alien Workshop and Stüssy each got a Dunk to colour, and the results were personal in a way brand-led collaborations rarely are.
Robbie Jeffers took the Stüssy pair to Neapolitan ice cream. Chocolate reads as dark khaki across the toe surround, heel and eyestay; strawberry becomes shy pink on the toebox and side panels; vanilla is the off-white swoosh and tongue label. A waffle-cone print sits on the insole, and a cherry is stitched onto the tongue tag, finishing the joke without having to explain it.
It released in July 2005 at $150. Two decades on it is still read as one of the strongest shoes of that era, largely because the idea is complete rather than applied: every panel is doing a job in the same sentence, which is more than most food-themed sneakers manage.
