Nike Skateboarding launched in 2002, and Stefan Janoski (a professional skater from Vacaville, California, who had started skating in 1992 and ridden for Habitat) was among the riders it took on. When the company offered him a signature model, he would not hand the drawing over. 'I was completely involved with the design of my shoe,' he said. 'The beginning was a struggle... but as it was my signature shoe, I would not compromise.'
What came out was unusually plain for a skate shoe: a low silhouette with almost no overlays, closer to a canvas deck shoe than to the padded skate models of the era. By 2013 it had become one of the more widely worn shoes Nike SB has ever produced.
This version removes the last complication. The slip-on takes the laces away entirely, in black canvas, in grade-school sizing, at $60, which is roughly what the design was arguing for in the first place.
