Grey in name, Pure Platinum in Nike's colour code, this women's-only Air Max 1 LX arrived on September 7, 2018 at $130. Everything is rendered in the same pale silver-grey: the leather panels, the textile sections between them and the laces. What keeps it from reading flat is a faint pattern printed onto the mudguard and heel, visible up close and gone at a distance, plus the natural contrast between the grain of the leather and the weave of the textile.
Under the upper sits a Phylon foam midsole with the Max Air unit exposed at the heel, finished with a Waffle rubber outsole. Tinker Hatfield, who drew the original, came to Nike in 1981 as an architect designing buildings and stores and only moved to footwear in 1985; a one-tone pair like this strips the shoe back to the shapes he laid out, with no colour blocking to lean on. For a lifestyle pair it is quiet by design: a neutral grey that works with almost anything and lets the sculpted midsole do the talking.
