The Blazer was Nike's first basketball shoe. It arrived in 1973, when the company was nine years old and had no presence on a court worth speaking of, named after the NBA team in its home state, and it reached television because George Gervin agreed to wear it. He also became the first Nike athlete given a version with his own nickname on the heel in place of the brand name. Almost nothing about the design has changed since, which is exactly why it survives: leather upper, flat sole, an oversized swoosh covering most of the side panel and nothing competing with it. That plainness makes the shoe a natural base for finishes that would overwhelm anything busier. This one is coated in iridescent film across the whole mid-top, with metallic laces and a translucent outsole underneath.
