The Presto was built around a fitting problem. Tobie Hatfield's team wanted a shoe that would fit a wide range of feet without a wide range of sizes, and what they arrived at was a stretch upper held by a plastic cage, sold in small, medium, large and extra large. Nike introduced it around the 2000 Sydney Olympics under the line that it was a t-shirt for your feet.
The marketing went further than that. Thirteen launch colorways were each given a cartoon character and a nickname, which is unusual for a running shoe and is a large part of why the model stayed in circulation long after it stopped being sold as performance footwear.
The React version, introduced in 2019, keeps the sleeve and cage, replaces the original foam with Nike React, and revives the character-per-colorway idea. This women's black and grey pair adds a suede heel overlay with a pull loop and rides rubber pods under the React midsole. It shipped at $130 in May 2020.
