Nike unveiled the Kobe VII in December 2011 with an idea no other signature line had tried in quite this form: sell the shoe as a kit. Inside the box sat two insert-and-cuff combinations, and the player chose which one went in before a game.
Attack Fast paired a Phylon midsole with Zoom Air at the forefoot and heel and a low-cut, power-stretch cuff: the lighter, quicker option. Attack Strong ran full-length Cushlon with a taller ankle cuff for a softer, more supported ride. The same outsole and upper carried both, so the difference a player felt came entirely from what was dropped inside.
It is a rare example of a signature shoe shipping with its own configuration options rather than splitting into separate models, and it explains the System name that ran through the whole seventh-generation range.
This pair uses the Lakers’ home palette (white with court purple, black and university gold), and the Opening Day name places it at the start of a season rather than at a playoff or All-Star moment.
