Nike built the Pegasus Turbo by taking the foam from its marathon racing programme and putting it into a shoe people could train in every day. ZoomX, the compound developed for the Vaporfly, sits in a layer above React foam, giving the shoe most of the racer's return without the carbon plate or the price, a project shaped in part by feedback from Eliud Kipchoge, who wanted a version of the racing shoe he could log ordinary miles in. This particular pair was made for one race. The city marathon colourways Nike produced that year each borrowed from a specific route, and the Berlin edition takes grey from the road surface and a mint green stripe down the centre of the upper from the copper patina on the Quadriga statue above the Brandenburg Gate, with 'BLN' printed at the heel. Flywire cables handle the midfoot. Berlin is the flattest and fastest of the six major marathons and has produced more world records than any other course, which makes the pairing less arbitrary than most city editions manage: the shoe and the route exist for the same reason.
