ZoomX arrived inside a racing shoe almost nobody could buy. It was the foam in the Vaporfly Elite and the Vaporfly 4%, and it was the reason those shoes felt unlike anything else: extremely light, unusually resilient, and not built to survive daily training.
The Pegasus Turbo took that foam and put it in a trainer. Nike paired ZoomX with a firmer carrier foam so the midsole would hold up over repeated miles, kept the Pegasus name and general fit, and priced it at 180 dollars: a lot for a trainer, a fraction of what the racers commanded.
The notable omission is the plate. The Vaporfly’s carbon fibre spring plate adds stiffness and propulsion, which serves a race and works against a runner doing easy miles six days a week, so Nike left it out. That decision is what made the Turbo a training shoe rather than a cheaper racer, and it set the pattern for the plateless, super-foam trainers that followed across the industry.
