Bruce Kilgore designed the Air Force 1 in 1982 as the first basketball shoe to carry Nike's Air cushioning. Its performance life was brief. What kept it in production was everything that happened afterwards: the white-on-white version became a fixture in hip-hop and in street dress generally, referenced in music and worn far past any connection to the sport it was built for.
That history is why an all-white collaboration is a defensible choice rather than a lazy one. Supreme's 2014 version does almost nothing to the shoe. White leather upper, white midsole, white outsole. The changes are confined to details: pebbled leather across the Swoosh instead of smooth, the label's arc logo embroidered on the heel, and World Famous printed on the ankle strap the high-top version carries.
That strap is one of the model's oddities. On many versions it is movable or removable outright, a hangover from a period when the shoe was meant to be adjustable, and on high-tops it has become the panel collaborators use when they want to sign their work without touching anything else.
It was a Holiday 2014 release, dated 23 October 2014, priced at 150 dollars.
