Supreme was Nike SB’s first outside collaborator after the division launched in 2002, and the pairing produced a Dunk Low in elephant print borrowed from the Air Jordan 3. The follow-up, a year later, took the high-top.
The reference point was Nike’s own history. The Dunk arrived in 1985 as a college basketball shoe issued in school colours, and Supreme picked three of the original palettes (university blue, college orange and varsity red) rather than inventing new ones. The execution went somewhere else entirely: a faux croc-embossed upper, an oversized padded tongue, three sets of laces in the box and a gold jewel at the lace tip.
The branding was the complication. An early version was rejected inside Nike in March 2003 over how the logos were handled, and the shoe that shipped replaced the Swoosh with a pattern of gold stars, a detail forced by an internal argument that ended up defining the design.
It remains one of the most referenced shoes of the SB era, and this is the blue of the three.
