Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young opened a stationery and fancy goods shop in New York on 18 September 1837 with a thousand dollars borrowed from Tiffany's father. Silver made the company's name: by 1867 it had become the first American firm to win an award for silverware at the Paris Exposition Universelle.
The colour came to matter as much as the metal. The pale blue was registered as a trademark in 1998 and later standardised with Pantone under the name 1837 Blue, tying the shade to the founding year. LVMH completed its purchase of the business in January 2021.
The collaboration that followed inverted what everyone expected. The retail version put the blue on a small heel patch and left the rest of the shoe black; this friends-and-family edition does the opposite, running bright teal leather across the whole upper with black nubuck on the swoosh, eyestay and back tab. A leather Tiffany tag sits on the tongue and a sterling silver plate is fixed to the heel. The outsole is finished in the blue. It listed at $400.
