Four exposed columns under the heel make the Nike Shox R4 immediately recognizable. On this women's Black edition, smooth synthetic leather covers the upper and Max Orange supplies the contrasting accent. Curving lines and small perforations give the surface its distinctive appearance, while the raised rear section creates the forward-leaning profile associated with the R4. The black finish brings attention to those changes in shape, from the rippled side panels to the separate cushioning columns.
The R4 debuted in 2000, with an upper informed by spacesuits and other astronaut equipment. That reference explains the combination of a smooth outer shell, fluid contours and finely placed perforations. Its four compressive heel columns also made the cushioning mechanism part of the design itself. This edition retains that relationship between the upper and heel: a sculpted shell above a visibly segmented support system.
