The RS shoes are named after a computer. In 1986 Puma released the RS-Computer, a running shoe with a chip in the heel that logged time, distance and calories and connected to a home machine through a sixteen-pin cable, developed with a biomechanics researcher. Running System, shortened on the shoe to RS. Almost nothing about it functioned as a mass-market product, and the idea arrived roughly three decades early. Puma revived the name in the 2010s for a family of heavy lifestyle models drawn from the same 1980s archive, enlarging the proportions well past anything the originals had. The 2.0 arrived as a consolidation of those shapes: stacked panelling, a thick outsole unit, layered textile over leather. An electric blue and violet accent against grey keeps the structure readable, which matters on a shoe whose entire argument is how it is built up.
