Reebok launched the Pump on 24 November 1989, using an inflatable bladder to lock the foot and ankle in place. The mechanism was not developed in-house: Reebok took the idea from an Ellesse ski boot and worked with the design firm Design Continuum to fit it inside a basketball shoe. Pressing the button on the tongue inflated the chamber, and a release valve let it back down.
What makes this version odd is the body it sits on. The Classic Leather is not a Pump shoe. It is a soft, low, unremarkable running silhouette that spent decades as a plain white default, and grafting the brand's most theatrical piece of engineering onto its least theatrical shoe is the whole idea here.
Market, the Los Angeles label, spends most of its energy on graphics that imitate corporate signage and institutional branding, which is roughly the register this colorway works in. Burgundy with collegiate gold and chalk trim reads as varsity kit for a school that does not exist, and the Pump button on the tongue becomes the one piece of hardware that gives the costume away.
It came out on 19 December 2023 at 130 dollars, with an EVA midsole and a textile-led upper rather than the all-leather build the Classic name implies.
