The XT-4 was a trail running shoe when Salomon released it early in the 2010s, and for most of that decade it was nothing else: a mesh upper reinforced with abrasion-resistant TPU, a SensiFit structure wrapping the foot from the midsole up through the lacing, an EnergyCell midsole with a chassis to damp impact, and a Contagrip outsole. None of it was designed to be looked at.
That changed from the outside in. Fashion buyers picked the shoe up, collaborations followed, and Salomon found itself with a second business it had not planned. Its Sportstyle arm formalised the situation, reworking archive trail models as Advanced versions for shops that had never sold hiking gear.
The OG designation, used from 2023, points the other way: back to the shoe as originally specified, before the lifestyle rework. This fiery red pair came in February of that year at $220. It is the same trail shoe it always was, now sold largely to people who will never take it off pavement, which describes most of Salomon's recent success.
