The shoe is old; the brand is not. Sheepskin boots had been worn by Australian surfers for decades before Brian Smith started selling them in Southern California in 1978, and the version that took hold there was the tall Classic: a pull-on boot with no closure, made from twin-face sheepskin so that the suede faces out and the wool faces the foot.
The Ultra Mini is the same construction compressed. The shaft stops just above the ankle, which changes what the boot does: it stops being outerwear and starts being something worn the way a slipper is, indoors and out. The sole is light EVA rather than the heavier treads the tall boots used, and the fleece lining is designed to be worn without socks.
The short cut is now the dominant one in the range, which is a reversal of how the brand grew. Canary yellow is a long way from the sand and chestnut the Classic built its reputation on, and the flat colour makes the suede’s nap read more clearly than a neutral would.
