Stephen Curry was a Nike athlete until 2013. The negotiation went badly enough that he left, and Under Armour, which had no real standing in basketball, signed him. He wore the Clutchfit Drive and the Anatomix Spawn before his first signature shoe arrived in 2015, by which point he was the league’s most valuable player.
The line moved fast after that. The Curry 1 used an Anafoam upper that limited what could be done with colour; the Curry 2 switched to SpeedForm, a moulded material borrowed from Under Armour’s running shoes that takes the shape of the foot and allowed more freedom in the graphics. The 2.5 followed as a mid-cycle revision, keeping the SpeedForm construction and reworking the collar.
Dub Nation is the nickname of the Golden State crowd, and the colourway is built from the team’s palette rather than a player detail: team royal and midnight navy with taxi yellow. At its peak the Curry line outsold every signature basketball shoe except Jordan Brand.
